Japanese trading card listings use a vocabulary that assumes you already know it: booster, box, construction deck, promo, tin. These are product formats, not grades of scarcity, and mixing them up is the most common reason a card purchase turns out not to be what someone expected.
The table describes what each format physically is and what the sealed-versus-opened question means for it.

Sealed card products, side by side

Sort by any column, or type in the filter box to narrow the rows. The last two columns are live counts from our own shelves — not a market index, just what we physically have listed right now.
| Format | What is inside | How it was sold | Sealed or opened | What to check when buying | Our listings (USD) | In stock now | Browse |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Booster pack | A small sealed pack of randomised cards from one set | Sold singly or by the box | Sealed by definition — an opened pack is loose cards | That the wrapper is intact and the set code is legible | $157–$5,064 (11 listings) | 11 | See these → |
| Booster box | A sealed outer box holding a fixed number of booster packs | Sold as one unit at release | Sealed, or opened with the packs still inside | Whether the outer seal is intact, and that the packs match the box’s set | $2,303 (1 listing) | 1 | See these → |
| Starter / construction deck | A fixed, non-random card list plus play accessories | Sold as a ready-to-play product | Either — the contents are known, so an opened deck is still identifiable | That the card list is complete and any rulebook or counters are present | $268–$936 (4 listings) | 4 | See these → |
| Promo card | A single card distributed outside normal packs | Given out with magazines, at events, or with campaign purchases | Single card — usually loose or in a small sleeve | The promo marking and which distribution it came from | $440–$9,268 (54 listings) | 54 | See these → |
| Boxed set / tin | A themed container with a fixed set of cards and often extras | Sold as a single boxed product | Either — the box itself is part of the product | That the container, inserts and every listed card are present | $142–$2,329 (20 listings) | 20 | See these → |
What this guide deliberately leaves out: we describe what each format physically is, and stop there. How sought-after an individual set is depends on the set and shifts over time, so any figure we printed here would be invented. Formats are stable; the rest is not, and we keep the two apart.
Which format should you be buying?

If you want specific cards, the fixed-content formats — decks, boxed sets and promos — tell you exactly what you are getting before you pay. If the opening itself is the point, boosters and booster boxes are randomised by design, and that randomness is the product. Decide which of those two you actually want before comparing listings, because they are not substitutes.
For older Japanese sets there is a third consideration: whether a sealed item should stay sealed. That is your call, and we do not have a view on it — we just describe accurately what state an item arrived in.
How we describe card products

We photograph the actual item, state whether it is sealed or opened, and list what is physically present. Where a format normally includes an insert or accessory and ours does not have it, that is written in the listing. We do not grade cards ourselves, and we repeat only what is actually printed on the card itself.
If what you are weighing up is condition rather than format, our condition and market liquidity guide and the value simulator both work from our own recorded sales, with the sample size shown next to every figure.

If the exact version you want is not there — and with one-of-a-kind secondhand stock it often is not — tell us what you are after on our sourcing request page and we will look for it through our Japanese supply channels. You can also browse the demand catalogue to see what we actively source.
