The North Face Novelty Scoop Jacket in Woodland Camouflage A Mountain Parka You Can Trust in Both the City and the Mountains

Jacket Down / Trench Coat / outer

A woodland camouflage that melts into the forest, with a white embroidered logo on the chest. Among The North Face mountain parkas, the Scoop Jacket has stayed popular as a piece you can wear in the city and on the mountain alike.

The jacket featured here is the patterned version of that design, the Novelty Scoop Jacket in woodland camouflage, men’s size M. The inner tag shows the model number NP61525 and tells us it is a product of Goldwin, the company that runs The North Face in Japan.

Below we look at the features and details of the jacket, the history of the brand, the origin of the camouflage pattern, other colors, and similar models.

Overview of the Jacket

The North Face Novelty Scoop Jacket in woodland camouflage, front view

This is a hooded mountain parka covered in a camouflage pattern of green, brown, beige, and navy. A white embroidered “THE NORTH FACE” logo sits on the left chest. The front closes with a zipper and a flap, and the cuffs have hook-and-loop tabs.

The pattern is bold, yet the silhouette is clean, so just throwing it on makes it the star of an outfit. Because it is a shell jacket that keeps out rain and wind, it works from autumn through spring.

About The North Face

The North Face is an outdoor brand born in San Francisco, in the United States. On October 26, 1966, Douglas Tompkins and others opened a mountaineering gear shop at 308 Columbus Avenue, and that was the beginning. The name comes from the north face of a mountain in the Northern Hemisphere, the side that is the coldest and the hardest to climb.

The shape of the logo is modeled on Half Dome, the granite rock in Yosemite National Park. Today this mark on the chest is recognized at a glance, from climbing gear to everyday clothes.

Goldwin Brings It to Japan

WEATHER STATION, the first directly operated The North Face store, opened in Harajuku in 1985

Goldwin is a sportswear maker that began in 1950 in Toyama Prefecture. It is known for ski wear and swimwear, and besides The North Face it also runs brands such as Helly Hansen and Speedo in Japan. The photo shows “WEATHER STATION,” the first directly operated store, which opened in Harajuku in 1985. The shop was set up to find out what would actually sell for The North Face, which was still little known then, and it was deliberately given a name unrelated to the brand.

The North Face arrived in Japan in 1978, and the importer was Goldwin. According to an article on nippon.com, Goldwin acquired the trademark rights for Japan and Korea in 1994, and from then on product development in Japan got into full swing.

About 98% of the products sold in Japan are said to be original Japanese designs. The functions born in America are reworked to suit Japanese body types and everyday city wear. This Scoop Jacket is one of those Japan-planned pieces, and the tag also carries the words “GOLDWIN INC.”

2026 Marks the 60th Anniversary

Counting from its founding in 1966, 2026 is exactly the 60th anniversary. According to an article in AdverTimes, Goldwin held a special exhibition, “NEVER STOP EXPLORING EXHIBITION,” from October 1 to 31 at its head office in Kita-Aoyama, Tokyo. Built around the brand’s motto “NEVER STOP EXPLORING,” the exhibition introduced 60 years of the brand’s history.

About the Scoop Jacket

Inside the Scoop Jacket, showing the lining and mesh

The Scoop Jacket is a mountain parka made to be used widely, from climbing and trekking to skiing and snowboarding and everyday city wear. “Novelty” is the name given to the patterned series, which takes the same construction as the plain Scoop Jacket and pairs it with patterns such as camouflage and checks.

According to the maker, the outer fabric uses a two-layer structure of “HYVENT,” a waterproof and breathable material. HYVENT is an original The North Face material, a nylon fabric with a polyurethane coating on the back. It keeps rain out and lets moisture from sweat escape.

The jacket is also packed with features made for the mountain: the “Zip-in Zip System,” which connects a fleece or down inner layer with an inside zipper, a double flap on the front that keeps rain and snow from getting in, a detachable snow cuff, and a one-hand hood adjuster.

About the Woodland Camouflage

The woodland camouflage pattern

Image source: Wikimedia Commons (Henrickson, CC BY-SA 3.0)

The pattern on this jacket is a camouflage called “Woodland.” It was adopted by the US military in 1981 and was created by redrawing, at a larger scale, a camouflage used around the time of the Vietnam War. It uses four colors: green, brown, sand, and black. This is the color scheme meant to keep a person from standing out in the forest.

The US military switched to new patterns from the 2000s to the 2010s, but Woodland stayed on as a classic pattern in the fashion world. Known as a military jacket pattern, it gives a lighter impression, quite different from a uniform, when it is applied to the parka of an outdoor brand like this one.

Design Highlights

The camouflage pattern leaves a strong impression, but looking at the small parts, the jacket has many touches typical of a mountain parka. From here we look at the details one by one.

Embroidered Logo on the Chest

Embroidered THE NORTH FACE logo on the left chest

The logo on the left chest is embroidered with white thread, not printed. Even on the busy camouflage, the white embroidery stands out clearly, and you can tell it is The North Face at a glance.

Adjustable Hood

The hood and its drawcord

The hood is deep enough to cover the whole head on a rainy day. A drawcord runs along the edge of the hood, so you can adjust the size around your face just by pulling it. When you are not wearing it, you can leave it down on your back, where it becomes an accent around the neck.

Mesh Lining Inside

The label at the inner collar and the mesh lining

The upper half of the inside has a mesh lining. It does not cling to the skin, and it stays less stuffy when you sweat. The label at the collar carries the brand logo and the size “M.”

Other Colors

The Novelty Scoop Jacket has been made in many colors and patterns, changing the pattern from year to year. This one is a green-based woodland camouflage. Here we introduce some typical patterns from the same series.

Brown Woodland

This is the same woodland camouflage, put together mainly in brown and olive. It gives a calmer impression than this jacket and blends well with autumn browns and beiges.

Green and White Camouflage

Novelty Scoop Jacket in green and white camouflage

This is a bright camouflage with plenty of white added to a muted green. Even though it is still camouflage, it looks light, so it is an easy pattern to try for people wearing camouflage for the first time.

Black and White Gingham Check

This pattern has a fine gingham check all over. The check is so small that it looks gray from a distance, which makes it easy to pair with neat, clean outfits, and a jacket that works well for commuting or school too.

Navy Polka Dots

Novelty Scoop Jacket in navy polka dots

This is a women’s pattern with white polka dots scattered over navy. The functions of the mountain parka stay the same, and the pattern adds a playful touch. It shows well how wide the series is.

Seen side by side like this, woodland camouflage is a pattern that strikes a good balance between presence and ease of pairing.

  • Official price: 16,500 yen (tax included, ITmedia NLab, as of March 2026)
  • Features: water-repellent, windproof, comes with a storage bag

Sizing and Styling

The jacket on a hanger, showing the overall silhouette

Because it is a Japan-planned product, the sizes follow the Japanese system. It runs smaller than a Medium from an overseas brand, so if you usually wear US sizes, take one size up as a guide.

Care Tips

The inner tag, showing model number NP61525 and the care label

The inner tag has a mark showing that the jacket can be hand washed (up to 30°C / 86°F), and a warning that twisting it hard in a washing machine can make the waterproof tape on the seams peel off. To make it last, please keep the following in mind.

  • Wash by hand in lukewarm water (up to 30°C / 86°F)
  • Do not use bleach or detergent containing fluorescent whitening agents
  • Do not rub hard or wring it out by twisting
  • Do not wash it together with other items, to prevent color transfer
  • After washing, hang it to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated place
